Buzzi Unicem renews its slag transport logistics: an integrated and sustainable rail service
Buzzi Unicem has launched a new rail service dedicated to transporting granulated slag from the Port of Savona to the Trino plant, creating an integrated logistics solution that significantly reduces environmental impact and improves operational efficiency.
Since September 2025, the trains operated by Mercitalia Rail, part of the FS Logistix group, have been moving over 900 tons of material per trip, reducing by around 30 the number of trucks travelling each week to the plant.
Operations at the Savona terminal are managed by FHP Group Holding, which recently acquired the majority of BuT, ensuring continuity and reliability in rail loading.
Upon arrival in Trino, the unloading of containers is handled by SEA Srl, which uses only vehicles powered by HVO biofuel, reaffirming the commitment to more sustainable solutions throughout all stages of transport.
To facilitate loading and unloading operations, Buzzi Unicem uses 40 20’ Bulk Carrier Hard Top containers supplied by SICOM, a long-standing partner of the company. These containers are designed with removable roofs to enable easy top loading and fast, safe gravity unloading.
Supporting activities at the plant also include a 35-ton Hangcha forklift, leased from Gruppo Selini. It is the first of its kind used by Buzzi Unicem and contributes to optimizing the handling of rail convoys.
This network of collaborations between Buzzi Unicem and its logistics and technical partners represents a virtuous model of integrated work, aligned with the goals of the European Green Deal and with national strategies for more sustainable mobility.
With this project, Buzzi Unicem reaffirms its commitment to increasingly efficient, safe, and environmentally conscious logistics.
